How to Get Started...
Seeking the support of a counsellor can be daunting, and it can be difficult to know where to start. We make every effort to make this process as painless as possible by offering 15 minute complimentary phone consultations so you can get a sense of the person you may be talking to about personal matters and trusting with your emotional safety. The relationship that develops between you and your counsellor is very unique and built on trust, acceptance, complete non-judgement, and understanding. We encourage you to make an appointment or phone consultation to help decide if counselling is right for you at this time in your life.
OPTIONAL PHONE CONSULTATION
Some individuals like to dive into the counselling process and some are more cautious. We encourage people who are interested in counselling, but are feeling cautious, to email to arrange a free 15 minute phone consultation. The consultation is a chance for you to check out if the counsellor is someone with whom you feel comfortable talking. You can ask questions about the therapy process, scheduling, therapeutic approach and/or experience. It may be helpful to share the reason for seeking counselling and hear about how the counsellor may support you in attending to your specific concern. After this conversation, you can decide if you would like to make a full 50 minute appointment, or perhaps need to take a bit of time to consider other options. It is our strong belief that finding a counsellor with whom you feel a sense of connection is essential for you to fully benefit from the counselling process, and if you do not sense the right fit then we will happily support and encourage your continued search for a better match. COUNSELLING SESSION
If you do decide to continue after the phone consultation (or if you skipped the consult and are heading into the first full 50 minute session), then the process begins by exploring the areas of concern. You might want to use the time and space to process current stresses. losses or to understand patterns in your life. You may want to focus on building skills in coping with your internal experience and/or life events, or you may want to build healthier relationships with yourself, your partner or family members. Or you might not have a clear idea of what you would like to focus on and that is just fine too! Whatever objectives (or not) you hold, we will help guide you in defining and meeting them.
We, at Counselling on Main, approach therapy from differing theoretical frameworks, but collectively we understand that each person is unique and ultimately wants to be seen and understood. We approach each person with gentle curiosity to help understand their personal challenges and support transformation and growth. Together, you and your counsellor will discover the process that brings you toward what you are seeking, whether it is relief, clarity, deeper understanding, and/or personal growth.
